This week, Atlantic Panamax freight for fronthaul grain shipments out of East Coast South America remain supported despite weakness in the Pacific Basin, and market participants hope the strength will hold until seasonal demand picks up in March. Freight rates for trans-Atlantic coal runs, on the other hand, are tumbling due to softening demand in Europe for US coal.

This lower demand, combined with higher domestic stockpiles, milder weather and lower natural gas prices, has weakened US utility coal prices. But winter isn't over, and a sustained cold spell in any major market would increase demand for coal-fired generation.

Natural gas markets are watching for signs that the Freeport LNG export terminal operator will resume production this month. The major Texas facility has been offline since June 2022, and the outage continues to weigh on US gas prices.

In power markets, the California Energy Commission will get updates on Wednesday on the status of California's hydrogen refueling network. The state looks to deploy 100 publicly available stations by the end of the year, and 179 stations by 2027.

The ammonia market is seeing global spot prices fall from previous highs and expects clarification to come from the Tampa February contract. The contract generally settles at the end of the month and serves as an index for Caribbean and global markets.

And in metals, S&P Global Commodity Insights will host its 35th Annual Aluminum Symposium this week in Miami. Keynote speaker Steel Dynamics CEO Mark Millett will discuss the company's upcoming entry into the aluminum market with a new rolling mill.

I'm Julia Pecha. Thanks for kicking off your Monday with S&P Global Commodity Insights.
