What is Mexican Steel Rebar Index?

The Platts Mexico Steel Rebar Index by S&P Global Commodity Insights is an emerging benchmark that measures monthly percentage changes related to the price of domestically traded steel rebar. The index is derived from the monthly average of Platts weekly spot market price assessments by S&P Global, which are based on bids, offers, transactions and indications of value collected from market participants by the Platts price reporting team.

The index and assessments are used by steelmakers, distributors and consumers throughout the Mexican steel market as a basis for both long-term contracts and spot negotiations.

How do we assess Mexican Steel Rebar Index?

The Platts Mexico Steel Rebar Index by S&P Global Commodity Insights is calculated with the monthly average of the weekly Platts assessment (SB01603), which considers domestically produced rebar grade 42, Norm NMX-C-407, 500-1,000 mt, on a DDP Northeast basis. Other locations, qualities, lot sizes, and equivalent products are normalized back to the assessment's base specifications.

For the weekly assessment, a wide array of market participants (buyers and sellers) are contacted on a daily basis. S&P Global considers bids, offers, trades, and indications of value to determine repeatable market value. Verified deals serve as the basis of our spot price assessments. However, assessed values may change in the absence of transactions, based on market dynamics and a wide range of data.
