Author: Dr Clifford Adams | Number of pages: 62 | PDF Report
Ruminants have served and will continue to serve a valuable role in sustainable agricultural systems. They supply large volumes of high value food and utilize low value feed ingredients.
Ruminants however have major adverse impacts upon the environment. Chiefly, they produce various greenhouse gases and release nitrogen and phosphorus into the environment which can impact upon air quality, global warming, and soil & water pollution. This report reviews this issue, exploring how ruminant production can be improved to allow for a more sustainable process.
At the same time, the nutritional quality of meat and milk must be considered, and managing ruminant health without antibiotics is a key topic. The use of new and novel feed ingredients such as wood, microalgae, seaweeds and insects are being developed to combat these issues.
This report offers an in-depth review of ruminant production, assessing it's direction of travel and highlighting key innovations, growth markets and challenges.
